What cookies are
Cookies are small files stored on your device. We also use similar technologies such as local storage and software identifiers in our apps. We group them into three categories: essential (needed for the service to work), analytics (help us understand how the site is used), and marketing (help us measure our advertising).
Cookies on our website
Essential
- tention_geo
- Sets your region so we can apply the right consent default. First-party. About 12 hours. Set before consent because it is required to decide the default.
- tention_consent
- Stores your cookie choices. First-party, set by our consent tool when you make a choice.
- Authentication cookies (__session, __client_uat, __client)
- Keep you signed in. Set by our authentication provider. Strictly necessary.
Analytics (set only after you consent, where consent is required)
- _ga, _ga_<id>
- Google Analytics 4 identifiers used to measure site usage. About 2 years.
- _tention_aid
- A first-party anonymous identifier used for attribution. About 13 months.
- _tention_ft
- A first-party record of the first page and referrer that brought you to us. About 90 days.
Marketing (set only after you consent, where consent is required)
- _fbp
- Meta Pixel identifier used to measure our advertising. About 90 days.
- ref
- A first-party attribution cookie set when you arrive via a referral or founder link. About 60 days.
Analytics and advertising tools we use
- Google Analytics 4: measures website usage. IP addresses are anonymised, Google Signals is off, no advertising or remarketing features are enabled, and data retention is set to 14 months.
- Meta Pixel: measures our advertising (currently page-view measurement only).
These run on our marketing website. We do not use session-recording or screen-replay technology.
Our mobile app
The mobile app does not use browser cookies. It uses on-device storage and software identifiers:
- Secure authentication storage: keeps you signed in, stored encrypted on your device by the operating system. Essential.
- Local app storage: stores app preferences and state on your device. Functional.
- Error monitoring (Sentry): collects crash and error diagnostics so we can fix problems. Functional.
- Expo (push, updates, app identifiers): supports notifications and over-the-air updates. Functional.
- Product events: the app records in-app actions (for example, opening the app) to our own servers over an authenticated connection. This is first-party and not a cookie.
The app does not use any advertising SDK and does not use device advertising identifiers or app-tracking-transparency tracking.
Your choices
On our website you can accept all, reject all in one click (as easily as accepting), or choose by category, and change your choice at any time through "Cookie settings" in the footer. In the EU, EEA, UK, Switzerland and Brazil, non-essential cookies are set only after you opt in; elsewhere (including Australia and the US) they are on by default and you can opt out. We honour Global Privacy Control signals. For California residents, our advertising-measurement cookie (the Meta Pixel) may constitute "sharing" under the CPRA; you can opt out via Cookie settings or a Global Privacy Control signal. You can also control cookies through your browser settings.
Third parties and regions
The providers behind these tools, and the regions where they process data, are listed in our Sub-processors register.
Changes and contact
We may update this policy as our tools change; the "last updated" date above reflects the current version. Questions: privacy@tention.app.
